Why is Employee Motivation Important in the Workplace?

Written by Thomas Ince | 03 October 2022

Employee motivation is a key to achieving success as an organisation. When employees are motivated and are driven, they will produce their best work. In doing so, the ambitious goals of the organisation are more likely to be met. In this article, we will explore how important employee motivation is, and we will explain why motivation is an important attribute of staff that all directors should focus on improving in order to ensure the success of their organisation.

Employee Motivation Explained

Employee motivation is the measure of interest, commitment, passion and enthusiasm that employees hold towards the roles that they work in and the company in which they work for.

Employee Motivation and Productivity

There is a direct link between employee motivation and employee productivity. Motivation improves productivity as employees are more engaged within their roles, resulting in less time being wasted and more time being spent on achieving the goals of the business. Employees working with low motivation are likely to be working at a slower pace. They are commonly completing the minimum amount of tasks needed from them, and they are not working to the best of their ability. Employees with higher levels of motivation don’t just complete the minimum amount of tasks needed from them, but they achieve the maximum that they can achieve within the role.

Motivation Improves Staff Retention

As a business leader, ensuring employee motivation results in a higher rate of staff retention. When staff are motivated, they are likely to find the work that they are doing within the business to be rewarding. In turn, they are more likely to stay within their roles for longer. When employees lose motivation, they likely can’t see a future for their careers within the organisation and the roles that they work in. When employees are motivated, they likely can see a future for themselves within the roles and the organisations that they work in. This leads to a higher level of staff retention within the organisation, as employees are more motivated to be successful within their roles and the organisation.
