Melissa Woolcock attended our virtual CMI Level 7- Digital Leadership Course

Case Study Profile

Melissa is a new manager at Mercator Media Ltd – B2B publishing company with magazines and events focusing on the marine industry – Melissa was keen to attend this course so she could lead her team successfully through times of change.

She explained: “We are going through a lot of digital changes including changing our customer relationship management (CRM) system and producing virtual exhibitions and conferences. The objective is to make revenue from digital platforms to keep the company afloat as the pandemic has been challenging for publishers. I want to be able to keep my team motivated and inspired through quite stressful times."

Company Overview

Mercator Media is an award winning publishing and media company specialising in maritime industries. Their magazines and events cover a wide variety of industries, such as marine business & technology, ports & terminals and environmental strategies.

The Learning Objectives and Challenges

Melissa chose to do this course for her own personal development and, as a relatively new manager, she thought it would be useful. Also as her company are going through a lot of digital transformations at the moment and knew that this course would be applicable to.

She gained a lot of valuable knowledge on leading a team, change management, stakeholder management and more. She found the frameworks and models very useful and her highlight was the final day when they worked on a project as a group and presented their final solutions. This project was really useful for her company as it was on changing CRM systems and how to communicate this to teams and educate them so they feel more involved.

The Learning Experience

Melissa would highly recommend the digital leadership course. She learnt a lot of valuable information that she can implement within her department. Working on real life examples was very useful as well as collaborative working with other professionals. She thinks the way this course was conducted on Zoom worked very well as she still managed to interact with other course members via breakout rooms. Melissa thought the structure was great and Julie Hall really made the course interesting.

How Has Your Training Benefited You So Far?

Melissa thinks one of the key learnings I will use in my role is trying to create a digitally-ready culture within my team, looking at SMART objectives, how I communicate to my team and also the overall business strategy. This would be helpful for me in creating a digitally-ready department. I think from all the learnings on the course, if applied correctly, it will make my job role easier as my team will be change leaders and be more independent and responsible.
