Case Study Profile

Fiona Hamer

Guys and St Thomas NHS Trust

Fiona Hamer attended our Agile Leadership Programme last year to learn more about agile leadership and how it can be integrated into her role. At the time, Fiona was working on a trust wide project to reshape and change the trusts current outpatients process, which is where she felt agile project management would support.

Read her agile learning case study below.

Company Overview

Guys and St Thomas NHS foundation trust is a large organisation made up of inpatient, outpatient and community services. Spanning across Lambeth and Southwark but also providing some services to London. Under our trust are many services that are commissioned centres of excellence.

As part of King’s Health Partners, an academic health sciences centre, we’re pioneers in health research, and provide high quality teaching and education. This partnership helps us provide the latest treatments alongside the best possible care.

The Learning Objectives and Challenges

We are guided by our values, which means putting patients first, taking pride in what we do, respecting others, striving to deliver the best care and acting with integrity.

My primary motivation for attending the course, was so I could learn more about agile leadership and how it can be integrated into my role. Currently I’m working on a trust wide project to shape and change the outpatients process.

I also wanted to broaden my knowledge and skills around agile leadership. As my current role is Head of Nursing for medical supplies, I lead as part of a Directorate management team to deliver the trusts strategies and effectively lead my team. The main challenge for us at the trust is the motivation of our staff. Trying to ensure that our team members have the time to make changes efficiently and looking at changing the outpatient services in a constructive way.

The Learning Experience

I feel that I’m taking valuable knowledge away from the course, specifically how to use agile leadership models in a working environment and the difference between leading a project and trusting the work streams to make the right changes.

The Agile course has given me a fresh view on my role and how I can make effective changes within my daily responsibilities using the models provided. It was great working with Alex, he had a vast amount of industry knowledgeable and was able to demonstrate with real examples, which I felt were highly effective.

How Has Your Training Benefited You So Far?

Since attending the course, I have returned to my trust with a wealth of agile leadership knowledge and we have made changes to the way we plan change and keep track of our progress. Allowing to make more informed decisions as change within the trust develops.

Thanks to Alex and the agile course, I have been able to get more involved with the ‘reshape of outpatient services’ project. We have been making more strategic decisions and successfully guiding our staff through the changes.
