By definition, resilience is the ability to respond to pressure and handle stress well. Being able to do so is a useful skill, and it enables you to adapt in challenging situations in the workplace. Resilience is becoming a more popular skill within the workplace, and more and more people in business are turning to different techniques to improve their resilience within the workplace.

Better resilience in the workplace results in less stress within the team. The ability to handle pressure and unexpected set backs effectively results in a less stressful and more enjoyable working environment. This in turn leads to better productivity within the workplace. Less stress also results in less sickness, lateness and absences, as stress is a major contributor to anxiety and depression, which is a large cause of workplace absences.

Workplaces that have better resilience reduces conflict and break downs in communication as employees don’t take comments as personally. Employees can work together more effectively without friction and negativity impacting working relationships. Better resiliency also allows employees to learn how to handle different personalities in order to work effectively on shared projects.

Conflict within the team will be reduced, as resilience allows employees to better handle differences of opinions and personality clashes. It allows them to work past these issues to still maintain a working relationship and to continue to benefit the rest of the team.

Improving resilience improves the overall wellbeing in the workplace. Resilience reduces stress within the organisation and this in turn improves job satisfaction and productivity. This will also reduce employee turnover, as the culture of the organisation will be improved.

Resilience encourages an optimistic and proactive approach to life. This makes a big impact on wellbeing in the workplace. Resilience isn’t reactive, it is a proactive approach. Resilience doesn’t come into play when an individual faces a problem or a challenge. An individual with a high level of resilience will have a positive approach to work, and this will have an influence on the culture and wellbeing of the organisation.

Resilience allows staff to focus on the future and have a positive outlook. They can plan their workloads realistically and work towards deadlines effectively. This leads to better organisation within the team. Deadlines won’t be missed, and projects will be planned and managed more effectively. By having a future oriented mindset, employees can plan their work more effectively.

Staff also are not overwhelmed by approaching deadlines. Through better resilience, they no longer feel as intimidated by deadlines as they once did. Instead they can focus on them and work towards them more strategically.
